Coastal Trails Coalition Receives $5000 award for Plum Island Bike Lanes
June 23, 2005 (Newburyport, MA) … The Coastal Trails Coalition (CTC) announces that it has received a $5,000 grant from Bikes Belong for the construction of bike and pedestrian lanes along the Plum Island Turnpike. Extending from Union Street in Newburyport to the intersection of the turnpike and Old Point Road in the Newbury section of Plum Island, the lanes will greatly improve safety and increase bicycle and pedestrian access to and from the beaches and recreational facilities on Plum Island.
The Lake Gardner Improvement Association, funded with a grant from the Provident Community Foundation, along with considerable help from Mayor Hildt, Town Engineer Rob Desmarais and DPW Director Brian Gilbert, will be constructing a boardwalk to connect the beach path at Lake Gardner with the public trails on Powow “Po” Hill. The boardwalk is intended to bridge an area which is almost always muddy and difficult to cross. The purpose of the project is to improve public access and thereby further encourage passive recreation on the extensive trail network along the Po Hill greenbelt. Walkers will now be able to walk comfortably from the Riverwalk, through Town and up to the Camp Kent Environmental Center on the New Hampshire border.
Volunteers are needed on the construction date, which is June 11. We will meet at 7:30 at the bath house, set up assembly stations and by the end of the day, we hope to have all construction completed on about 100 feet of boardwalk. For more information visit www.lgia.org and call 978.388.6173 to please let us know that you can join us, which will help with our planning.
